A weakening car battery: 7 signs to watch for (and when to replace it)

A dead car battery is the most frustrating breakdown — often at the worst moment (a rainy Monday morning, the hospital car park, leaving on holiday). Here are the 7 signs it's reaching the end of its life, and what it really costs to replace in Belgium in 2026.

How long does a car battery last in Belgium?

In 2026, the average lifespan of a car battery in Belgium is 4 to 6 years. Several factors speed up or slow down this ageing:

The 7 signs that your battery is about to die

1. Slow or hesitant starting

The starter turns more slowly than usual, or takes 2-3 seconds instead of starting instantly. It's the most reliable and earliest sign.

2. Battery warning light on the dashboard

The red or orange battery symbol comes on — either the battery is failing or the alternator has stopped charging. Get it diagnosed quickly.

3. Headlights dim when you start

Turn the headlights on, then try to start: if they dim a lot, your battery no longer has enough reserve power.

4. The car stalls at idle

An unstable idle (fluctuating RPM, sometimes stalling) can point to a failing battery (electronics not getting enough power). Often mistaken for a fuel pump problem.

5. Slow electric windows

The windows go up and down more slowly with the engine off (battery power only). An easy test to do in your car park.

6. Intermittent ABS, ESP or airbag light

ESP, ABS and airbag ECUs don't cope well with voltage drops. If several warning lights come on and off at random, the battery is often to blame (not the ECU).

7. Corroded terminals (white/green powder)

Under the bonnet, on the battery terminals: white or greenish corrosion points to an acid leak and/or chemical ageing. Short-circuit risk. If you see it: plan a replacement within 1-3 months.

When to act urgently: if you notice 3 or more signs at once, change the battery within 7 days. You will break down at the worst moment, guaranteed.

How much does a replacement cost in Belgium in 2026?

Type of carBattery fitted by Warehouse Care (incl. VAT)
City car or compact without Start-Stop (Twingo, Picanto, Golf before 2016)276 €
Start-Stop car, EFB battery (most cars since 2016)374 €
Premium, AGM battery (Audi, BMW, Mercedes)487 €
Luxury (Porsche, Tesla, Land Rover)629 €

All-inclusive prices, fitting at your home included. The exact price is calculated for your car from your chassis number (capacity, Start-Stop, EFB or AGM type required by the manufacturer) and shown before you book.

EFB vs AGM: why it matters

Modern cars with a Start-Stop system must have special batteries:

Fitting a standard (lead-acid) battery to a start-stop car = the system disables start-stop within 3-6 months + risk of breakdown. Always use the type the manufacturer requires.

Doing it yourself: possible?

Technically yes (15 min with a spanner), but there are 3 pitfalls:

  1. Resetting windows and sunroof needed on many recent cars (manufacturer-specific procedure)
  2. Battery coding is mandatory on Audi/BMW/Mercedes (otherwise the ECU doesn't recognise the new battery and charges it badly — lifespan divided by 2)
  3. Mandatory recycling of the old battery (Bebat scheme in Belgium) — not in household waste

Warehouse Care's advice: with a standard battery (60 Ah petrol), you can do it yourself. With a Start-Stop EFB or AGM battery (recent car), use a professional for the coding. The price difference is worth it.
