Getting your car ready for winter: the checklist

Mornings are getting colder, nights longer and roads more slippery. Half an hour of checks now avoids a breakdown at the worst moment. Here's the complete checklist, in order of importance.

The checklist before the first frosts

battery_charging_full1. The battery

It's the number one cause of winter breakdowns. More than 4 or 5 years old, slow starts, Start-Stop no longer kicking in: have it tested. Why the cold weakens it.

tire_repair2. The tyres

Check the tread depth (legal minimum 1,6 mm, but grip drops well before that) and the pressure, which falls in the cold. Winter tyres aren't compulsory in Belgium, but they're recommended if you drive a lot.

ac_unit3. The coolant

It contains the antifreeze that protects the engine. Check the level with the engine cold, never hot: the system is under pressure.

water_drop4. The screenwash

Replace it with a winter screenwash containing antifreeze. Plain water freezes in the reservoir and the jets.

water5. The wiper blades

Blades that streak or judder on the glass badly reduce visibility in rain and snow. They take a few minutes to change.

lightbulb6. The lights

In winter you often drive in the dark: check every bulb, including main beams, brake lights and indicators, and clean the light lenses.

In the boot: the winter kit

If your service is due soon, do the oil change before winter: fresh oil suited to your engine makes cold starts easier. Also keep an eye on the date of your next MOT.

What we can do at your place

By appointment, the mechanic comes to your home or office for the battery (test and replacement), wiper blades, bulbs, oil change and diagnostics. Prices shown before you book. Tyres aren't part of our services.

Frequently asked questions

help_outlineAre winter tyres compulsory in Belgium?

No, there's no general requirement in Belgium. They're recommended from November to March, and some neighbouring countries require them in wintry conditions, such as Germany: bear it in mind if you travel.

help_outlineWhen should you get your car ready for winter?

Ideally between late October and early November, before the first frosts: appointments are easier to get and you avoid the breakdown on the first cold morning.

help_outlineWhich screenwash should you use in winter?

A special winter screenwash, with antifreeze. Plain water or summer screenwash freezes and can damage the pump and jets.

help_outlineCan you get my car ready for winter at home?

Yes for the battery, wiper blades, bulbs, oil change and diagnostics: the mechanic comes to your home or office, by appointment. Tyres aren't part of our services.
